The Greek historian Herodotus, writing in the 5th century BC, characterized the Egyptians of his time as "excessively religious", more so than any other people in the world. Although the ancient Egyptians had no word for religion, it was omnipresent in all human activity. In pharaonic times people believed in One supreme, almighty God: Amun. The multitide of God's divine attributes, qualities or particular aspects were represented or symbolized by the neteru or godforms such as Osiris, Isis, Horus etc. Through careful observation of the natural world, even certain animals represented particular aspects of divinity. This enabled people to get a better understanding of and work together with God's creation.
Christianity too is closely interwoven in Egypt's rich history and both the Coptic Christians and Muslims are proud of the privileged place their country holds in Gods design.
"...behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I bring you word, for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him". (Matthew 2:13)
The blessing to be bestowed upon Egypt, for its having been chosen as the Holy Family's haven, and upon its people for having been the first to experience the Christ's miraculous influence is felt strongly among all Egyptians.
The Holy Family stayed in Egypt for almost four years. During this pilgrimage you visit sites along the Nile that commemorate the passage of the Holy Family and the miracles performed by the infant Jesus.
