The great Arab historian Ibn Khaldun as well as the anonymous author of the Arabian Nights called Cairo "The Mother of the World." And although nowadays the Mother of the Word is adorned with flyovers and shopping malls, Islamic Cairo's maze of narrow streets offers vivid glimpses of the past.

In the medieval part of Cairo you'll see:
  • Several mosques of which the first and oldest dates back to the arrival of Islam to Egypt in 641.
  • Madrasas - places if study of which the Al-Ahzar is the most revered center of learning in the Islamic world.
  • Sabils - public fountains which are a typical architectural element in Islamic Cairo
  • Private houses which are masterworks of domestic architecture
  • Wikalas or Caravanserais - trading places and accommodation for merchants and their animals arriving in caravans
  • The Citadel, once home to Egypt's rulers
  • Khans - Oriental Bazaars
  • Islamic Museum of Art
  • Performance of the whirling Sufi Dervishes
  • The old coffee house where the famous writer Naguib Mahfouz spend so many hours. Naguib Mahfouz, awarded with the Noble Prize for Literature, is best known for his masterwork The Cairo Trilogy of which the intriging story takes place in this Islamic area of Cairo.
